Welcome home, Monkey! Whether you're a long-time Swing Citizen, returning to our crew, or joining our aerial playground for the first time, this guide will help you navigate our community, understand our values, and make the most of your time at Black Rock City.

 

Founded in 2010 by Jessica Cail and Robert Chapin, Swing City grew from the Original Muscle Beach community in Santa Monica, bringing our beach playground culture to the Playa. Our magnificent hanging city is designed around traveling rings and has evolved to include aerial apparatus, hammocks, mats for acro, slacklines, and critical shade from the desert sun.

 

As part of our tribe, you'll discover:

• Our history and vision to share community and expand the fun
• How to set up camp and integrate into our "monkey family"
• The resources available to you (water, food, showers, solar charging)
• Safety protocols and consent principles that keep our community thriving
• Your responsibilities as one of our crew, from participation in build/teardown to MOOP duty

 

We don't compete, perform, or show off. We hang out, play, share, and encourage the curious while creating space for those who prefer to find their own way. Our core value is radical participation—contributing to the preparation, building, maintenance, and breakdown of our Schwing City.

 

Remember: Radical Self-Reliance is essential. While we offer many resources, always have backup plans for water, food, shade, and personal care. The Playa is unpredictable; our best experiences come when we're prepared for anything.
